[lfc.tv] Steven Gerrard 400 up
by Paul Hassall, 28 October 2007
He's a Champions League winner, an FA Cup hero and one of the greatest players of the modern era. But it doesn't stop there for Steven Gerrard. Sunday will mark his 400th appearance for the Reds - yet another milestone in his glittering career.
---
Cast your mind back to November 29, 1998.
It is the dying embers of a routine 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers and a fresh-faced youngster from Huyton has just thundered into a challenge on the right-hand touchline in front of the Kop.
It inspires a huge cheer and brings a smile to the faces of the followers in the stand, as one of 'their own' achieves the reality of what thousands dream of - to play for Liverpool Football Club.
But what those supporters would not have realised at the time, was that it was the moment when one of the Reds' greatest ever players began his rise to the pinnacle of the world game.
It may have only been a cameo appearance when he came on as a 90th minute substitute for Vegard Heggem, but in that period of injury-time he showed the kind of commitment and drive that would become a feature of his Reds career.
Fast forward to the present and Steven Gerrard is on the verge of making his 400th appearance for Liverpool when Rafael Benitez's side welcome Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday.
It is a significant landmark for a man who has become recognised as the heartbeat of the side during a decade of magnificent highs.
Since that first appearance in a Reds shirt he has gone on to score 77 goals for Liverpool and boasts a repertoire of strikes to match anyone in the world.
From the moment he opened his account against Sheffield Wednesday in his 25th game for his hometown club through to the inspirational header in Istanbul that sparked a Reds revival, and a sensational double in the 2006 FA Cup final - he has developed into a man for the big occasion.
As he leads the side onto the hallowed Anfield turf on Sunday, he will become only the 26th player in Liverpool history to reach that milestone figure for the Reds.
It is a proud moment and fitting that it comes in a top-of-the-table clash, against a side of Arsenal's calibre.
The skipper has enjoyed a rollercoaster ride against the Gunners over the years and in 20 appearances he has felt the full range of emotions, from the high of the 2001 FA Cup final victory to the low of the 6-3 Carling Cup defeat last season.
In that time he has struck three goals against Arsene Wenger's side, the best of which came at the Kop end during a magnificent 4-0 triumph back in December 2000.
A similar goal on Sunday would go some way to ensuring he rounds off his 400th appearance for the Reds in typical Gerrard-style.
